CBS4 Boston - New England's Source For Breaking News, Weather, and Sports for Boston, Worcester, Cape Cod, Nashua, and More: State Agency Makes Up Kid For Cash: "State Agency Makes Up Kid For Cash"
AP) HOUSTON It was a heart-wrenching story: A 10-year-old boy named John, separated from his mother since the hurricane, was living with other foster children in an emergency shelter, and he had one Christmas wish ¿ to go home....But the story was a work of fiction.State caseworkers (with state Child Protective Services in Brazoria County, outside Houston, Texas) apparently made it up to tug at readers' heartstrings.
Now, I've been saying that CPS is messed up for years. This just cinches it for me. I know, CPS has it's place. But, I tell ya...in this day and age, if you even raise your voice to your kids, they can threaten you with CPS. Things gotta change there, but that is my opinion. Anyway, I digress...Oh, and here is what someprofessorr had to say on the whole thing....
Bob Steele, a former TV news director who teaches ethics at the Poynter Institute, a school for journalists, said the problem could have been averted if the profiles had been done by reporters rather than caseworkers.
Okay, I'm done now, you can ignore this rant or read the article and get mad too.
